Short discovery: who the users are, what would count as success, and the constraints that are real (timeline, stack, hosting, whatever cannot be changed). Most of the expensive mistakes I have watched happen were decided here, before anyone wrote code.

I design the interface and build it, so the trade-off between what looks right and what the data can actually do gets made once, by someone who has to live with both. Prototypes when they settle an argument faster than a discussion, working software as early as possible.

Performance, accessibility and the SEO basics before launch; deployment support at launch; then iteration on what real use turns up. I have maintained several of these projects for years, which is the part that decides whether the first version was any good.

I use AI coding tools for exploration, scaffolding and large refactors, then verify behaviour, edge cases and security before anything ships — generated code gets read like any other diff. At Insellerate I maintain a plugin that encodes our conventions and review expectations, so assisted changes arrive in the house style rather than a plausible-looking variant of it.
